Final Call for the New Staff Golf Outing!

The weekend is drawing near which means the New Staff Golf Outing at Riverside Golf Course is only about 48 hours away!  There are still a few spots to sign up and play.  Remember, you don't need to be a new staff member to participate.  We have many veteran staff signed up to play as well.  If you have a coworker/mentor/friend/spouse/significant other that you want to golf with, talk to them and get them signed up!  For only ONE DOLLAR PER HOLE you can enjoy an afternoon of golf including:

Motorized Golf Cart
FREE golf club rentals if needed!
Dinner afterwards
Participation in hole events (closest to pin, longest drive, etc.)

Did I mention the weather forecast says a high of 82 and partly cloudy skies? ... perfect for a day on the course.

Also, don't forget that the format will be a "scramble":

In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.  The team records one score on each hole.

A scramble is perfect for players of all skill levels.  If you clank a drive, chunk a chip, or dribble a shot ten feet, it doesn't matter because you can use another person's shot in your group.  This will be low pressure and fun!

Email me as soon as possible if you would like to register to play on Saturday.  Let me know if you want to play 18 holes or just 9 holes and list the names of the people in your group.  If you don't have anyone to play with we will place you in a group.  See you on Saturday!

Golf Outing News

There are still plenty of spots to sign up for the New Staff Golf Outing to be held at Riverside Golf Course next Saturday, September 28th.  Remember, only $1 per hole to play!  That's 9 dollars for 9 holes or 18 dollars for 18. This includes a cart, free rental clubs if needed, buffet dinner afterwards in the clubhouse, and participation in various games on the course with the chance to win prizes (longest drive, longest putt, closest to pin... etc.). Also, we have decided to play in a scramble format.  A scramble works as follows:

In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.  The team records one score on each hole.

The fun part about a scramble is that if you duff a shot (which all of us do every now and then) it doesn't really matter because someone in your group will probably hit a better shot.  Scramble play = less pressure = more fun.

Again, email me if you would like to register!  Just let me know what people you would like to be grouped with.  Otherwise, we will place you in a group.  It's going to be a great afternoon!

Golf Outing Updates!

Attention New Staff,

I am excited to announce that a date and location has been set for the New Staff Golf Outing!  Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28th at Riverside Golf Course here in Janesville.  Thank you to Forward Janesville and Data Dimensions for sponsoring this event.  Because of their generosity it will only cost you a dollar a hole to enjoy your afternoon of golf!  You have the option of either playing 9 holes for $9 or a full 18 for $18 (clever, right?).  Tentative tee times will be noon for those playing 18 holes and 2/2:30 for those playing 9.

Your payment will cover:

Green and cart fees, rental clubs, buffet dinner afterwards in the clubhouse, and participation in various games on the course with the chance to win prizes.

We will do our best to accommodate if you want to golf with a spouse, significant other, or friend who may not be a new staff member.   However, since this is a New Staff Event, we encourage you to golf with fellow first year staff.

Please email me at rstengl@janesville.k12.wi.us if you would like to register.  If you have a group of people you want to be paired with please include their names in your email and if your group will be playing 9 or 18 holes (eg. I would like to play with _________, __________, and ___________.  We will by playing 9/18 holes) and also indicate who will be needing rental clubs.  If you want to play but do not have a group, we will gladly assign you to a group.

Thanks everyone and happy Friday!

New Teacher Gatherings!

A reminder that we will be gathering after school from 4 - 6 THIS Friday at O'Riley & Conway's Irish Restaurant located at 214 W. Milwaukee Street.  We are lucky to have a retired educator that is one of the owners there and is willing to sponsor our group.  Please be sure to find Ed Quaerna on Friday and thank him for hosting us.  We have the Twisted Chimney Room reserved (this is the new addition for those that have been there before). Complimentary appetizers will be served.  After your first week of school you deserve to have a little fun with other new teachers.  Stop on by for a few minutes or stay the whole time!  It's always a good time to make a friend or two.  You are welcome to bring friends and/or significant others along even though they may not be a first year teacher.  All are welcome!

Also, a new teacher golf outing is being organized as I speak.  Whether you are a scratch golfer or a beginning duffer, this event is sure to be a blast!  Details regarding the date and location will be forthcoming, so stay tuned.

Survival Tips for New Educators

Expect things to take MORE time than you think they will. A simple little assignment that you think will take 15 minutes may end up taking the whole class period.

Expect things to take a lot LESS time than you think they will. You will sometimes find that what you had planned for two days will take 15 minutes. Then you will be facing 30 students with nothing to do – not a good situation.  Always plan more thank you think you could possible need.

Don’t be distraught if you have to trash one day’s lesson plan because of an unexpected schedule change. That change will seem irrelevant by the time May rolls around.

As much as possible, handle paper only once.   Fill out forms from the office as you receive them.   Decide immediately what to keep and what to throw out.

You don’t have to do things the way the teacher next door does them. If piles work better than files for you, stick to piles.
